Morro Bay supports a high diversity of marine mammals, with 27 species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), six species of pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), and one species of fissiped (sea otter).
Humpback whales: March-December
Humpback whales are regular visitors to Morro Bay, especially during their feeding season, which runs from March through early December. These whales migrate from their winter breeding grounds off the coasts of Mexico and Central America to the nutrient-rich waters of California’s central coast. The best time to see them is typically from late spring through early fall, with peak sightings from May or June through December.
Gray Whales: December-May
Gray whales are a common sight in Morro Bay during their annual migration, which runs from December through May. These whales travel between their feeding grounds in Alaska and their breeding lagoons in Baja California, Mexico. The best chances to spot them are during their southbound journey from December to February, and again as they head north between March and May.
